ASKING THE QUESTIONS

You are going to watch the opening of a film. Once you have seen it twice we want you to think of five questions that you might ask about this extract.

INSERT OPENING EXTRACT OF A CLOSE SHAVE

So, what are your five questions? Are they about the story that is being told? The characters? The places?

Look again at your questions. Are they asking about WHAT  is happening?

Let’s think of some additional questions which look at How the story is being told. What devices does the film maker use to bring us into the story?

How did the filmmaker help us understand about a character?

Why did the filmmaker choose one shot instead of another?

Use why and how in constructing your new questions.
